SIG Biology of Ageing OPEN Meeting – June 16th 2022

The EuGMS SIG on Biology of Ageing is glad to invite you to a series of monthly open meetings to present the latest and activities of the teams and members of the SIG.

Each meeting will include a presentation and time for discussion.

Next meeting will be on Thursday June 16th, 2022 - 1PM CEST - 60 min –

Topic: Passion fruit extract inhibits memory loss and extends lifespan in Alzheimer's disease models

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common type of dementia, is a progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative disease, affecting over 50 million people worldwide. Unfortunately, there is no drug to cure AD at present. Natural plants are considered a useful source of phytochemicals. Here, we show the neuroprotective effect of an extract from Passiflora edulis (P. edulis, common name passion fruit), a common edible fruit in Thailand, and evaluate the underlying mechanism using cells and C. elegans models.  P. edulis extract not only inhibits -glutamate and beta-amyloid induced toxicity in cells, but also abolishes memory loss in a hTau[P301S], hA?1-42 AD like C. elegans. The memory protective activity of P. edulis extract is attributed to upregulation of mitophagy and impedance of neuronal loss. Currently, we have also identified two molecules from the P. edulis extract as lead compounds, which are considered as novel mitophagy inducer, with these molecules showing inhibition of Tau or amyloid beta pathologies and preservation of memory in model systems of AD, highlighting translational potential.

Presented by: Shuqin Cao

Shuqin Cao is a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Oslo and the Akershus University Hospital, Norway. In Associate Prof. Evandro F. Fang’s lab, she is working on the identification of potential anti-AD drug candidates from natural molecules. By combining both cell lines, C. elegans and mice she is aiming at understanding the underlying mechanisms of novel anti-AD drug candidates. Before joining the Fang lab, she holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Malaya, Malaysia, and a PhD degree from  the Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, and worked as a visiting PhD student in the Evandro Fang laboratory at the University of Oslo (UiO), Norway, since February 2020. For career development, she aims to become a researcher focusing AD drug development.
