SIG Biology of Ageing OPEN Meeting – OCTOBER 20th 2022

Dear Colleagues,

The EuGMS SIG on Biology of Ageing is glad to invite you to a series of monthly open meetings to present the latest and activities of the teams and members of the SIG.

Each meeting will include a presentation and time for discussion.

Next meeting will be on Thursday October 20th, 2022 - 1PM CEST - 60 min –

TOPIC: A role for gut bacterial metabolites in muscle wasting and sarcopenia

Sarcopenia is insufficiently tackled today, mainly due to a lack of knowledge about its pathophysiology. Increasing evidence points towards the gut bacteria as modulators in sarcopenia. With the TRIGG (Translational Research in Immunosenescence, Gerontology and Geriatrics) research group at Ghent University Hospital, we aim to better understand how this gut-sarcopenia interaction works, with a focus on bacterial quorum sensing peptides (QSPs). Dr. Anton De Spiegeleer will discuss the potential effects of quorum sensing peptide iAM373 in sarcopenia, as a proof-of-concept.

Presented by: Anton De Spiegeleer

Anton De Spiegeleer was born in Ghent on the 29th of April 1989. He graduated with greatest distinction as master in Medical Sciences at Ghent University in 2014 and will finish his specialization Internal Medicine, subspecialisation Geriatrics, in 2022. He succesfully conducted PhD-research on the role of quorum sensing peptides and natural killer T cells in sarcopenia, under the supervision and guidance of prof. dr. N. Van Den Noortgate, prof. dr. D. Elewaut, dr. E. Wynendaele, prof. dr. M. Petrovic and prof. dr. D. Deforce. He is first author of several scientific publications in international journals such as Age and Ageing, BBA Molecular Basis of Disease and Clinical and Translational Medicine. In addition, he received the Marie-Thérèse De Lava & Robert Schneider Grant of the King Boudouin Foundation and is the principal investigator of the TRIGG research group.
