German survey on well-being in old age

A first ‘Generali Old-Age Survey was released in Germany, involving face-to-face interviews with about 2,000 persons. This underlines that the group of 65 to 85-year-olds in Germany on average feel ten years younger than their actual age, with the majority of them leading active, satisfying and varied lives. Health seems to be viewed as the most important pre-condition for independent living. The study also shows that older people in Germany consider their material life situation to be good. The vast majority of 65 to 85-year-olds has close ties with their families and well-established circles of friends and acquaintances. Most older people are on good terms with their children and provide them assistance and advice as well as financial support.

As far as activities are concerned, 45 % of older people engage in social activities and are prepared to extend their commitment by up to six hours per week on average (currently four hours).
