Launch of the Joint Action on Mental Health and Well-Being, 21 February 2013

A Joint Action on Mental Health and Well-being, funded under the EU Health Programme, will be running from 1 February 2013 till January 2016. It will be coordinated by the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (PT).

Mental health and well-being, prevention of mental disorders and the improvement of care and social inclusion of people with mental disorders in Europe are the main themes of the Action which will bring together 45 associated and collaborating partners representing 27 EU Member States and associated countries.

The rationale for the Action is the fact that Europe is facing a rise in diagnoses of mental disorders; some 11% of the population is affected by mental health problems. The Joint Action will build on the work done under the European Pact for Mental Health and Well-being, and is direct follow up of the 2011 Council Conclusions on the European Pact for Mental Health and Well-being. It is a process for structured collaborative work involving the Member States and associated countries, the European Union, relevant stakeholders and international organisations.

It will address:

  • The promotion of mental health at the work place and in schools
  • Promoting action against depression and suicide
  • Developing community mental health care and
  • Promoting the integration of mental health in all policies

The Action aims to provide more rigorous and comprehensive knowledge on of mental health and well-being situation in the EU and the development of a framework for action.
